The Catholic Church played a big role in medicine. The
church believed illness or disease to be a punishment. The church also opposed
to witchcraft. Potions were also seen as witchcraft and outlawed by the church.
Priests and other holy men were doctors. Law stated that only trained and
registered people could practice medicine. Monks, nuns, and local women were
just effective as actual doctors. Doctors were only available to the wealthy or
the people who could afford them. They charged for every checkup, remedy, or
potion used. Prayers and herbal remedies
were used. Remedies for diseases were based on potions or more effective cures.
