How did treatments and charms help medicine?

Doctors treated patients in several ways. Disease was thought to start when there was too much blood in the body. Bloodletting was a popular treatment. When a lot of blood needed to be taken, a doctor would cut a vein.  If a little blood was needed, then a leech was used. Doctors also tasted urine to diagnose sugar levels. A certain colour of urine would indicate an illness. Charms could help treatments. Charms were used for a variety of reasons. They appeared in medieval recipes. Charms were either written, spoken, or chanted. Amulets were small objects worn as magic charms. Amulets were believed to keep away evil.
